Allegheny Defeats Ohio Wesleyan and Wittenberg at NCAC Championships

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Allegheny women's tennis squad took on Ohio Wesleyan at Kenyon College during the first day of the NCAC Conference tournament.  After taking a 2-1 advantage in the doubles competitions, Allegheny won three straight to open singles play to take the decision in six. Carolyn Shetter, Debroah Landau, and Janna Dickerson all won in straight sets.  Allegheny had defeated Ohio Wesleyan earlier in the year, 6-3.

Following the Ohio Wesleyan match the Gators found themselves matched up against 25th regionally ranked Wittenberg.  In an epic five hour match between two top 25 regionally ranked teams, The Gators prevailed with a hard fought 5-3 victory to cap the 2011-12 season.

Allegheny took two of three in the doubles competition, getting wins from their number one and number two pairings.  Carolyn Shetter and Deborah Landau battled with Leah Ann Miller and Georgia Bennett in the number one doubles slot, defeating the Tiger duo in a tiebreak 9-8 (7-4). Elyse Schmitt and Janna Dickerson followed that up with a win of their own, defeating Kristin Wright and Anne Beauch 8-4.

Shetter won her second match of the morning when she beat Miller in number one singles action 6-0, 7-5. Landau continued the Gators winning ways with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 straight set victory over Alex Cummins in the number two singles hole.

Dickerson and Laura Steele both fought hard to close it out for Allegheny; however, both would fall just short setting up a dramatic finish for fifth place. The Gators would seal the victory when Schmitt defeated Maggie Stewart 7-5, 6-2 in the number five hole to give Allegheny the 5-3 win.

The win improves Allegheny to a final record of 10-10 on the season, as they currently sit at No. 21 in the ITA central rankings.
