Men Finish with Win Over Wabash!
OBERLIN, Ohio – With two Gators further solidifying their place in the Allegheny record books, the men's tennis squad finished the season in fifth place, upending Wabash, 5-3, at the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) tennis championships on Sunday evening at the Don Hunsinger Courts.
Junior Patrick Cole and freshman Tyler Triolo each won their respective doubles matches, finishing the season with 22 wins each in doubles matches, which is a new program record. The two surpass the previous record of 20 held by Davis Howell and John Dymond during the 1999-00 season. Cole, paired with junior Frank Mosconi, won top-flight doubles, 8-4 while Triolo and sophomore Daniel Conroy won their decision in No. 3 doubles, 8-1.
Cole also finished the season with 44 combined wins in singles and doubles, which also stands as the new program record, surpassing the 41 combined wins set by Pete VandeKappelle in the 1998-99 season. Cole won the top-flight singles match, 6-1, 6-2. Triolo added a 6-3, 6-3 victorious decision in No. 2 doubles as sophomore Sam Stephenson clinched the win with a 6-0, 6-3 win in the No. 6 spot.
The victory is Allegheny's first tournament win over Wabash since 2008. Allegheny also improves its final standing in the conference from the 2011-12 campaign, concluding a season that saw the team vault to an 11-0 record in dual matches.
Allegheny will start the 2013-14 campaign at the Nancy J. Heath Invitational, hosted in Meadville, next September.
