DAYTON, Ohio – Led by a record breaking performance by senior
Patrick Cole, the Allegheny College men's tennis team avenged last season's loss, sweeping the Wittenberg Tigers 9-0 Friday night at the Five Seasons Racquet Club in Dayton, Ohio.
Allegheny, currently ranked No. 16 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Central Region Poll, continued its recent dominance in doubles, sweeping the Tigers in all three matches. The Gators were led by the third doubles team of juniors
Sam Stephenson and
Alexander Hurtuk as they won an 8-3 decision. The top-flight doubles team of Cole and sophomore
Tyler Triolo, currently ranked No. 15 in the ITA Central Region Poll, took their match 8-5, as the sweep was completed by junior
Daniel Conroy and sophomore
Thomas Manning at No. 2 doubles, 8-4. Conroy and Manning improve their record this season to 9-1.
Cole, ranked No. 10 in the Central Region Rankings, broke two all-time Allegheny records on Friday, breaking both the all-time career singles wins and all-time combined wins. With the victory, Cole increases his all-time win total to 75 career victories, surpassing the previous career mark of 74 set by David Howell '00. In addition, Cole earned his 145th combined win, surpassing Howell's mark of 144.
The records, however, would not come easily for Cole as he found himself in an early deficit against Wittenberg's Stas Pomenchev. Cole was down 5-1 in the first set before finding his footing and winning four straight games to tie the set 5-5. The two number ones traded the next two games until they were in a tiebreaker.
The senior Cole took control early in the tiebreaker and won 7-2. The second set would go much smoother for Cole as he ran through the set and took the match with a 6-0 score, leaving him alone as Allegheny's all-time winningest player. Cole breaks the records previously held by David Howell and sets the new marks with 75 singles wins and 145 combined victories. Cole's career record improved to 75-19 in his career, with all but five of those matches coming as Allegheny's number one player.
The rest of the team did their part as well and continued to put together strong performances across the board. Conroy was off of court first taking number six singles 6-2, 6-1. Triolo then added at 7-5, 6-3 victory at second singles. Senior
Charlie Murphy added a win at fourth singles, getting the win when his opponent retired. At the time of the retirement, Murphy was winning 6-1, 4-1. This improves Murphy's record on the year to 14-8 in singles. Hurtuk won his match at fifth singles with a 6-1, 6-3 score. Manning completed the sweep at third singles, but was pushed to three sets, finally took the match in a super-tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-1, 10-7.
Friday's win avenges a loss to the Tigers last season in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, the Tigers defeated the Gators with a razor-thin, 5-4 score. The loss dropped Allegheny to the bottom half of the bracket, where they would end with a fifth-place finish.
The match marks the fifth sweep of the season for the Gators, as they improve their record to 8-4 on the season. They will look to carry their momentum into another match against NCAC foe Ohio Wesleyan Saturday morning. First serve will be at 10:00 a.m. in Delaware, Ohio.
