Singles Sweep Highlights Third Consecutive Victory
DELAWARE, Ohio - A sweep of the singles vaulted the Allegheny men's tennis team past Ohio Wesleyan, 8-1 on Saturday at Gordon Field House, earning the Gators their third consecutive in the process.
Allegheny led the match, 2-1, heading into the singles portion of the match thanks to the doubles wins from the No. 2 doubles squad of juniors Sam Stephenson and Alexander Hurtuk and the third flight pairing of junior Daniel Conroy and senior Frank Mosconi. Stephenson and Hurtuk took their match by a 8-4 score, while Conroy and Mosconi won 8-2.
With their win on Saturday, Hurtuk and Stephenson earn their 10th win of the season. Conroy and Mosconi improved their record to 7-3. The Gators could not secure the sweep of doubles, as the number one doubles team of senior Patrick Cole and sophomore Tyler Triolo dropped an 8-5 decision.
The Gators would pull away in singles, winning every match in straight sets. The sweep began with senior Charlie Murphy, who picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles. Cole would avenge his loss in doubles with a win at top-flight singles, taking the match, 6-1, 6-1 for his 19th win of the season. Hurtuk posted a 6-1, 6-3 No. 4 singles win to clinch the match for Allegheny.
Sophomore Thomas Manning, playing his first match at the number two singles position, was pushed to a tiebreaker in the first set, but won, 7-4, to take the set. Manning would run away with it in the second set, finishing with a convincing 6-2 score. Conroy would add a dominating 6-0, 6-0 win at the fifth singles position, before Mosconi, making his debut in the singles lineup this spring capped off the sweep and won at sixth singles 6-2, 6-0.
The Gators will take a couple of days off before returning to the courts on Tuesday when they take on the Lions of Penn State Behrend at the Robertson Tennis Complex at 4:00 p.m.
