Decisive Win Highlighted by Singles Success














GAMBIER, Ohio – The Allegheny College women's tennis team used a sweep of singles to defeat the Wittenberg Tigers, 8-1, at Kenyon College on Saturday afternoon.

The Gators held a 2-1 lead after doubles, earning wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles with identical 8-0 scores. Senior Kathleen McBride and sophomore Sun Mo Koo took the second-flight doubles bout, while sophomore Mikaela Pope and first year Haley Meekhof won at No. 3 doubles. McBride and Koo improve to 4-0 on the year as a pairing, while Pope and Meekhof increase their record to 4-2. Allegheny's number one duo of senior Laura Steele and sophomore Andrea Brush could not complete the sweep, dropping a close match, 8-6.

In singles play, Pope would get the Gators off to a strong start, getting off of the court first with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at third flight singles while improving to 7-2 on the year. Pope would be followed by first year Michaela Thompson, who won at No. 5 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 decision.

Brush would follow suit, winning at second singles 6-1, 6-0. Brush added to her team leading ten singles wins on the year, and improves to 11-4. McBride would come next at sixth singles, taking her match 6-1, 6-1, clinching the match for the Gators, before Koo took down her opponent by the common score of 6-1, 6-0. Meekhof would finish the sweep of the singles and the match with a 6-1, 6-2 win at fourth singles.

The Gators, who improved to 8-5 with the win, will take on the Division II University of Findlay Oilers Sunday in Gambier. First serve will be at 9:30 am.
