Allegheny men win match over Bishops

DELAWARE, Ohio - The Allegheny men's tennis team won a non-division matchup as it defeated Ohio Wesleyan, 6-3, on Saturday. The victory does not count as a conference win for the Gators as the Battling Bishops are in the North Coast Athletic Conference West Division.

Evan Gordon (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton), Zack Kerosky (Ashtabula, Ohio/Lakeside), Jake Allmaras (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) and Ben Hurtuk (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) were singles winners for the Gators.

Gordon won the second singles match over Daniel Thangarajah, 6-1, 6-4, while Kerosky was victorious at third singles against Brandon Luttinger, 6-3, 0-6, 10-3.

Also for Allegheny, Allmaras won in fourth singles versus Scott Hellberg, 6-3, 6-4, and Hurtuk claimed a win at fifth singles over Solomon Ryan, 6-1, 6-2.

The Gators also won two doubles matches. Allmaras and Gordon teamed to win at second doubles against Luttinger and Thangarajah, 8-6. In third doubles, Kerosky and Eric Roginek (Fresh Meadows, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) defeated Ryan Leslie and Zach Weaver, 9-8 (7-1).

Allegheny (7-5) will be in action next when it visits Grove City on Tuesday. The match will start at 3:30 p.m

Gator women's tennis loses nail-biter to Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio - The Allegheny women's tennis team lost a nail-biter to Ohio Wesleyan, 5-4, on Saturday in non-division play. The defeat does not count as a conference loss for the Gators as the Battling Bishops are in the North Coast Athletic Conference West Division.

The Gators and Battling Bishops split singles play, winning three points apiece. However, Ohio Wesleyan decided the match by winning two of three doubles matches.

Lauren Kristofco, Elyse Schmitt (pictured) and Alyssa Tom were individual winners for Allegheny.

Kristofco won the first singles match against Amber Schneider, 6-1, 6-3, while Schmitt was victorious at third singles over Emily Kiourtsis, 6-3, 2-6, 10-8. Tom defeated Mollie Campbell, 7-6, 6-0, in fifth singles.

The lone winning doubles team for Allegheny consisted of Schmitt and Janna Dickerson. The Gator duo defeated Campbell and Becky Simon at second doubles, 9-8 (7-3).

The Gators (8-6, 1-0 NCAC East) will be in action next when they visit Grove City on Tuesday. The match will start at 3:30 p.m.

Allegheny women sweep Wooster in NCAC opener

WOOSTER, Ohio - The Allegheny women's tennis team opened its North Coast Athletic Conference schedule with a 9-0 sweep at the College of Wooster.

Lauren Kristofco and Sara Longo won the first and second singles matches, respectively. Kristofco defeated Elissa Lauber, 6-3, 6-4, while Longo was victorious against Ashley Stockwell, 6-2, 6-2.

Elyse Schmitt, Janna Dickerson (pictured), Deborah Landau and Allison Elick also won at singles for Allegheny. Schmitt won in third singles against Brenna Hart, 7-6 (2), 6-2. Dickerson handled Kelsey Jenkins, 6-0, 6-4, at fourth singles; Landau bested Erin Bauer, 6-2, 6-1 at fifth singles; and Elick won the sixth singles match over Boo Flynn, 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles action, Kristofco and Longo defeated Lauber and Jenkins on the first tier, 8-2. Schmitt and Dickerson won the second doubles match against Hart and Bauer, 8-6, while the duo of Landau and Margaret Hodgkiss-Lilly claimed a win at No. 3 doubles versus Flynn and Stockwell, 8-6.

The Gators (8-5, 1-0) will be in action next on Saturday when they visit Ohio Wesleyan. Start time is 2 p.m.

Both Teams Go 3-1 at Hilton Head

The 2009 annual spring break trip to Hilton Head Island, SC was another successful one for the Gator Tennis program. Both teams only lost one match with the men earning wins over Macalester, Nazareth, and Nebraska Wesleyan and the women getting victories over Nazareth, Nebraska Wesleyan, and St. Lawrence.

The players also had time to ride bikes on the beach, go to Savannah, GA and enjoy the traditional team dinners.

Gators' streak snapped by Saint Lawrence

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Allegheny men's tennis team had its six-match winning streak snapped by Saint Lawrence as it fell 6-3 in its last match of Spring Break competition.

Evan Gordon (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) was the Gators' lone singles winner, claiming a victory over Pete Abernethy, 6-2, 7-5, at second singles.

In pairs competition, Gordon and Jake Allmaras (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty - Pictured ) defeated Jake Dexter and Ren Gates at second doubles, 8-6, while Zach Kerosky (Ashtabula, Ohio/Lakeside)and Eric Roginek (Fresh Meadows, N.Y./Archbishop Malloy) won in third doubles over Chris Rodilloso and Chris Tamm, 8-5.

Allegheny (6-5) will be in action next on March 28 when it opens North Coast Athletic Conference play at Ohio Wesleyan. The match will begin at 2 p.m

Gator women finish Spring Break trip with win over SLU

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Allegheny women's tennis team wrapped up its Spring Break trip with a 7-2 victory over Saint Lawrence on Wednesday. The win was the Gators' third straight.

Lauren Kristofco (pictured) was a winner at first singles over Liz Karam, 7-6(6), 6-0, as five different Gator individuals won singles matches.

Also for Allegheny, Elyse Schmitt defeated Chelsea Hubbell, 7-5, 6-3, at third singles and Janna Dickerson was victorious over Paige Cohen, 6-1, 6-1, at fourth singles.

In fifth singles, Margaret Hodgkiss-Lilly defeated Elizabeth Ronty, 6-2, 6-1, while Deb Landau won at sixth singles over Barry Edgar, 6-0, 6-2.

The doubles competition, Kristofco teamed with Sara Longo for a 9-7 first doubles win over Karam and Hillary Drewry. Dickerson and Schmitt won at second doubles against Edgar and Hubbell, 8-5.

The Gators (7-5) will be in action next on March 25 when they kick off North Coast Athletic Conference play at Wooster. The match will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Gator men handle Nazareth for sixth straight victory

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Allegheny men's tennis team won its sixth straight match as it defeated Nazareth, 8-1, on Tuesday.

Playing pro sets, the Gators won five of six individual matches and swept doubles competition. Winners in singles were Matt Chiricosta, Evan Gordon (pictured), Zach Kerosky, Jake Allmaras and Ben Hurtuk.

Chiricosta claimed a first-singles win over Adam Landry, 8-3, and Gordon was victorious over Stephen Trobert, 8-2, at second singles. Also for Allegheny, Kerosky defeated Alex Bodensieck at third singles, 8-2; Allmaras won against Ben Caiella in fourth singles, 8-2; and Hurtuk swept Collin Doran at fifth singles, 8-0.

At first doubles, Chiricosta and Hurtuk handled Landry and Trobert, 8-3, while in second doubles, Allmaras and Gordon were victorious against Bodensieck and Dan Matteo, 8-6. Kerosky and Eric Roginek also won in pairs, claiming a third-doubles victory over Caiella and Doran, 8-2.

The Gators (6-4) will wrap up Spring Break action on Wednesday when they take on Saint Lawrence at 8 a.m.

Allegheny women's tennis defeats Nazareth

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Allegheny women's tennis team improved to 2-1 on its Spring Break trip as it won against Nazareth, 7-2, on Tuesday.

Allegheny won five of six singles matches and two of three doubles tilts. In singles action, winners were Sara Longo (pictured), Elyse Schmitt, Janna Dickerson, Alyssa Tom and Deb Landau.

Playing pro sets, Longo took the win at second singles, defeating Elizabeth Way, 8-5. At third singles, Schmitt won 8-6 over Jessica Faber while, in fourth singles, Dickerson handled Kelly Noble, 8-2. Tom swept Sherrita Wilkins, 8-0, at fifth singles and Landau won against Jen Crane in sixth singles, 8-2.

Longo teamed with Lauren Kristofco to win the first doubles match over Noble and Rachel Leonard, 8-6. At third doubles, Allison Elick and Meggie Oravec defeated Wilkins and Abbey Going, 8-2.

The Gators (6-5) will wrap up Spring Break action on Wednesday when they take on Saint Lawrence at 8 a.m.

AC men's tennis stretches win streak to five

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Allegheny men's tennis team won its fifth consecutive dual match and its second on Spring Break as it defeated Nebraska Wesleyan, 6-3.

Matt Chiricosta, Zach Kerosky, Ben Hurtuk (pictured) and Eric Roginek claimed singles wins for the Gators. Allegheny also won two of three doubles matches.

Chiricosta won the first singles match over Jamie Holmes, 6-4, 6-3, and Kerosky was a winner over Diasuke Naito, 6-3, 6-4, at fourth singles. Also for Allegheny, Hurtuk defeated Mike Larsen, 4-6, 6-4, 10-2, in fifth singles, while Roginek handled Scott Ronshaugen at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles competition, Chiricosta and Hurtuk won their first-tier match over Eric Holmes and Jamie Holmes, 8-2. Kerosky and Roginek teamed to win at third doubles against Larsen and Ronshaugen, 8-3.

The Gator men (5-4) will continue play at Hilton Head Island on Tuesday. They will take on Nazareth at 8 a.m.

Allegheny women rebound on day two of Spring Break with victory over Nebraska Wesleyan

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Allegheny women's tennis claimed a 7-2 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan in its second match during Spring Break.

The Gators won four individual matches and swept the doubles competition. Lauren Kristofco, Elyse Schmitt (pictured), Alyssa Tom and Deb Landau were singles winners for Allegheny.

Kristofco won the first singles match over Mikayla Albin, 6-2, 6-1, while Schmitt was victorious at third singles against Lexie Zouchia, 6-2, 6-4. Tom was a winner over Sarah Howe, 6-2, 6-3, at fifth singles and Landau won at sixth singles versus Becca Brown, 7-5, 3-6, 10-5.

In doubles competition, Kristofco and Sara Longo teamed to win on the first tier and they handled Albin and Chelsea Henslee, 8-2. At second doubles, Schmitt and Janna Dickerson defeated Zouchia and Mikela Caudill, 8-5, while at thirds, Landau and Margaret Hodgkiss-Lilly beat Brown and Howe, 8-6.

The Allegheny women (5-5) will continue play at Hilton Head Island on Tuesday. They will take on Nazareth at 8 a.m.

Gator men edge Macalester on first day at Hilton Head

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Allegheny men's tennis team defeated Macalester, 5-4, in its first day of Spring Break competition.

The Gators claimed only two individual singles victories, but swept doubles competition in order to claim the team win. Matt Chiricosta (pictured) and Zach Kerosky were winners at first and fourth singles, respectively, for Allegheny.

Chiricosta defeated Charlie Edelman, 6-2, 6-2, while Kerosky handled Titus Levy, 6-1, 6-7(1), 10-3.

In pairs action, Chiricosta and Ben Hurtuk won at first doubles over Edelman and Michael Coleman, 9-7. In second doubles, Allegheny's duo of Jake Allmaras and Evan Gordon defeated Chris Fowler and Ali Bandeali, 9-8(1). Meanwhile, at thirds, Kerosky and Eric Roginek were victorious over Levy and Evan Elderbrock, 8-4.

The Gators will resume Spring Break action on Monday when it takes on Nebraska Wesleyan for an 8 a.m. start.

AC women drop first Spring Break match to Macalester

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Allegheny women's tennis team fell to Macalester, 6-3, in its first day of Spring Break action.

Janna Dickerson (pictured), Alyssa Tom and Deb Landau claimed points for the Gators at fourth, fifth and sixth singles, respectively.

Dickerson defeated Abby Citrin, 6-1, 6-1, while Tom was victorious over Becky Schneider, 4-6, 6-2, 10-5. At sixths, Landau won over Kelli Crescenti, 6-1, 6-3.

Allegheny will be in action again on Monday when it takes on Nebraska Wesleyan at 8 a.m.
