Allegheny Defeats Ohio Wesleyan and Wittenberg at NCAC Championships
GAMBIER, Ohio – The Allegheny women's tennis squad took on Ohio Wesleyan at Kenyon College during the first day of the NCAC Conference tournament. After taking a 2-1 advantage in the doubles competitions, Allegheny won three straight to open singles play to take the decision in six. Carolyn Shetter, Debroah Landau, and Janna Dickerson all won in straight sets. Allegheny had defeated Ohio Wesleyan earlier in the year, 6-3.
Following the Ohio Wesleyan match the Gators found themselves matched up against 25th regionally ranked Wittenberg. In an epic five hour match between two top 25 regionally ranked teams, The Gators prevailed with a hard fought 5-3 victory to cap the 2011-12 season.
Allegheny took two of three in the doubles competition, getting wins from their number one and number two pairings. Carolyn Shetter and Deborah Landau battled with Leah Ann Miller and Georgia Bennett in the number one doubles slot, defeating the Tiger duo in a tiebreak 9-8 (7-4). Elyse Schmitt and Janna Dickerson followed that up with a win of their own, defeating Kristin Wright and Anne Beauch 8-4.
Shetter won her second match of the morning when she beat Miller in number one singles action 6-0, 7-5. Landau continued the Gators winning ways with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 straight set victory over Alex Cummins in the number two singles hole.
Dickerson and Laura Steele both fought hard to close it out for Allegheny; however, both would fall just short setting up a dramatic finish for fifth place. The Gators would seal the victory when Schmitt defeated Maggie Stewart 7-5, 6-2 in the number five hole to give Allegheny the 5-3 win.
The win improves Allegheny to a final record of 10-10 on the season, as they currently sit at No. 21 in the ITA central rankings.

Allegheny Dominates in Sweep of Fighting Scots
MEADVILLE, Pa. – Saturday's women's tennis match was forced inside the friendly confines of David V. Wise Center due to inclement weather, but that didn't affect the Gators as they would cruise to a 9-0 win over the College of Wooster.
Allegheny dominated in doubles competition, dropping just five games in three matches. They would continue that momentum into singles play, overwhelming the Fighting Scots in every way.
Carolyn Shetter cruised in number one singles 6-1, 6-3, and Deborah Landau came back after dropping the second set to take number two singles in a super tiebreak 6-3, 3-6, 10-3.
Janna Dickerson won a close match against Boo Flynn in number three singles 7-5, 6-4; while Laura Steele (6-0, 6-2), Elyse Schmitt (6-1, 6-0), and Cortney O'Brien (6-1, 6-1) all came away with victories as Allegheny improved to 8-7 on the season. For the Gators it was their first NCAC contest of the season, and the win moves them into a first place tie with Oberlin in the NCAC East division.
The Gators will be off until Wednesday, April 18 when they will host non-conference rival Grove City at 4:30 pm.

Women's Tennis; Pat Cole Ranked in Regional Top 25
MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny men's and women's tennis teams both received exciting news Friday morning, as the new ITA regional rankings were released. The women's team, which has been ranked No. 25 for much of the season, moved up four spots in the central region to the No. 21 spot. While on the men's side, Patrick Cole has skyrocketed to become the No. 14 singles player in the central region.
The women's team climbed up the rankings with wins over No. 24 Kalamazoo and No. 22 Wisconsin-Eau Claire over the past month. The Gators currently sit at 7-7 on the season, playing one of the toughest schedules in the region. Along with Kalamazoo and UW-Eau Claire, Allegheny has also played No. 5 Carleton, No. 10 Case Western, No. 17 Hope, No. 20 Albion, and has matches scheduled with No. 16 Kenyon and No. 11 Oberlin.
For the men, Cole has been a force to be reckoned with all season long in the number one singles hole. He has played well all season long, but has really turned up the intensity over the past month. During the Gators spring trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina, Cole defeated No. 22 Chris Kuna of UW-Eau Claire and No. 10 Brian McCarthy of St. Thomas in convincing fashion.
Cole never allowed Kuna to get into the match, beating him 6-1, 6-0. McCarthy had a little more success, but not nearly enough to contend as Cole dismissed him 6-4, 6-1.
Cole was scheduled to take on No. 24 Andrew Hwang of Carleton; however, that match was not to be as Carleton decided to keep Hwang out of singles competition. They would face off in doubles play though, as Cole and partner Kevin Kacer defeated the No. 15 doubles pairing of Hwang and Dan Vollman.
The No. 14 ranking is believed to be the highest for any singles player in Allegheny history. Cole and the rest of the Gators will be back in action Friday night, as they travel to Greenville, Pa. to take on the Tomcats of Thiel College. The women will be in action Saturday afternoon, when they will host NCAC East rival Wooster at 2:00 pm.

Gators Beat Kalamazoo
Oberlin, Ohio – The Allegheny women's tennis team traveled to Oberlin College on Friday morning to take part in day one of the two day Oberlin Shootout. The Gators started the day strong by defeating the 21st ranked team in the central region, downing Kalamazoo 6-3.
The opening match against Kalamazoo provided some very dramatic moments, none more so then the number two doubles match between the pairings of Janna Dickerson/Elyse Schmitt and Kelsey Moran/Olivia Bouchard.
The Yellow Jackets took a commanding 7-4 lead when the Gators started to climb back in it. Dickerson and Schmitt came all the way back to tie it at 8 and send the match into a tiebreaker, only to see Moran and Bouchard earn match point on three separate occasions. Allegheny completed the comeback in amazing fashion, claiming the tiebreak 10-8 for a 9-8 win.
The win helped the Gators sweep the doubles competition en route to a 6-3 victory. Steele, Schmitt and Deborah Landau would provide the wins during individual play as regionally ranked No. 25 Allegheny improved to 7-5 on the season.
Gators Roll in Victory Over Wooster
MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny men's tennis squad hosted the Fighting Scots of Wooster on Saturday afternoon. A sweep of the doubles competitions boosted the Gators, as they would dispose of the Fighting Scots 6-3 for their second conference victory of the season.
All three doubles pairing for Allegheny had no trouble cruising to victories, as the Gators would enter singles play with a 3-0 advantage.
Patrick Cole continued his domination of the number one singles slot, defeating Landon Moore 6-1, 6-0. Wooster answered by taking the number two and three singles matches; however, Sam Stepenson and Frank Mosconi came through with victories in number four and five singles respectively to lock it up for the Gators.
The win improved Allegheny to 7-6 overall on the season as they sit tied atop the NCAC East standings with Oberlin. The Gators will be off until Friday, April 13 when they will travel to Greenville, Pa. to take on the Tomcats of Thiel College. The match is scheduled for a 4:00 pm start.

Kevin Snyder Featured on NCAC Website
Name: Kevin Snyder
Hometown/High School: Medina, NY/Medina
Institution: Allegheny College
Majors: Political Science and Communication Arts
Sport: Tennis
• I am originally from ... Medina, NY. It’s a really small town on the Erie Canal in between Buffalo and Rochester.
• Why did you choose to attend a NCAA Division III institution? The chance to play tennis while getting a great education was an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up. I really valued the small campus at Allegheny as well.
• How would you describe the philosophy of NCAA Div. III? Division III is all about playing for the name on the front of our jerseys. We play our sports because we love practicing and competing, and we also do it because our school, teammates, and friends are important to us. We also realize that academics are our top priority while at college and we treat it as such.
• How has your experience been in balancing athletics and academics Allegheny? It’s not easy, but it is doable. Allegheny is a tough school and in order to do well in the classroom and on the field I’ve had to really maximize my time when I am free, even if that means taking less naps! The professors at Allegheny are supportive of the student-athletes and when I do have to miss class for matches, they understand, but I still have to get the work done.
• How would you best describe your normal day as a student-athlete at the NCAA Div. III level? I.e. What do you do all day? I usually wake up, get some breakfast, and then head to class. After class I work at my work study job in our Office of Student Involvement. After that I either get some homework done or get some extra practice in with my coaches before our team practice. After practice, we usually get dinner as a team and then I head to the library to finish up my homework. Then I repeat.
• Favorite thing about Allegheny? The greatest thing about Allegheny by far is our community. That is something that set it apart from other schools for me. It’s special and when we say “We Are Allegheny,” we mean it. We are one big community and we support each other in the things that we do.
• Favorite thing about the NCAC? The competition of the conference is awesome. Being able to go up against some of the top tennis teams in the country is challenging but great at the same time. We are definitely one of the best tennis conferences in the nation.
• What do you want to be when you grow up? I’d love to work in Marketing and Public Relations. But I wouldn’t pass up a job in college sports.
• If you could trade places with someone for a day, who would it be and why? Jay Carney, he is the White House Press Secretary. I’ve always loved that job and if I was to go into politics, it would be my dream to do that.
• People may be surprised to know that ……All the names in my family start with the letter K. Even our pets.
• What’s currently playing on your I-Pod? “Mind Your Manners” by Chiddy Bang
• Do you have one coach and/or professor that has impacted your career the most at Allegheny? Jared Luteran, my Head Coach has definitely impacted me. He has taught me a lot about not just tennis but attention to details in life, which is something that I will use forever. He’s also helped me establish a good work ethic on the court and in the classroom. As far as Professors, Jim Bulman in our English department was my first experience with a college professor, and he was fantastic. He taught me what Allegheny was really about and how to make the most out of my time here. He was my advisor for my first year and a half, and the advice he gave me was gold.
• What would be your advice for someone that is considering enrolling as a student-athlete at a NCAA Div. III institution? Do it. It’s the best possible decision you could make. I’ve made lifelong friends on my team, developed great habits, and am doing something that I love to do. There isn’t much that beats competing for your school. I could not see myself not being a student-athlete.
• Who do you look up to? My Dad. He is one of the wisest people that I know.
• if you could excel at any competitive sport (other than your own) which would you choose? I’ve always wanted to play volleyball. I’ve always had fun playing it.
• Which historical sporting event would you have liked to witness? The 1993 Wild Card Playoff game between the Bills and the Oilers. You can’t beat great comebacks.
• What’s your favorite sports team/Who’s your favorite athlete? The Buffalo Bills are my favorite team, and my favorite athlete is Sam Querrey.
• My favorite sports memory is…? Playing at the National Tennis Center in New York City.
• Favorite ice cream? Chocolate Panda Paws.

Gator Tennis Finishes in Top 3 at Talent Show!
Justin Bieber sings Baby, Baby
Snooki admires Vinny’s muscles while Tim Tebow is Tebowing in the background
Both teams made a valiant effort to defend their title from last year at this year’s Student-Athlete Talent Show. They finished in third place with an original skit where they recreated a mock awards show imitating various celebrities including the Jersey Shore cast, Justin Bieber, Charlie Sheen and Tim Tebow. Once again 5 year old Lucas Luteran made a cameo and so did both coaches. The tennis team finished in third place, but there is a lot of speculation as to whether there may have been a mathematical error with the final scores. There are also rumors swirling of judge tampering. Either way, we know that tennis will be back again next year with another entertaining and original skit.

Luteran Named USTA Allegheny Mountain District Coach of the Year
MEADVILLE, Pa. - Allegheny men's and women's tennis Head Coach Jared Luteran was named the 2011 USTA Allegheny Mountain District Collegiate Coach of the Year earlier this month. Luteran has been at the helm for Allegheny since the 2002-03 season, and was selected as NCAC Co-Coach of the year in 2007.
The USTA Allegheny Mountain District Collegiate Coach of the Year honor is given to one college coach in the Pittsburgh, Western Pennsylvania, and Wheeling, West Virginia area who exemplifies the spirit of tennis both on and off the court.
"It is great to have such a quality program in the district," said President of the USTA Allegheny Mountain District David Dilettuso.
Luteran and the Gators tennis squads have had muich success in recent years. Just last season, Luteran coached NCAC Newcomer of the Year Pat Cole to top 25 regional ranking, while seeing eight men and women named with All-NCAC honors, including a record five on the women's side. The women had their best season since 1998, finishing third in the conference, while ending the year with their first ITA Regional Ranking.
Off the court, Allegheny tennis has been helping with the youth of Meadville. In the spring, the Gators held a Campus Kids Day; offering a chance for the children in the area to watch an Allegheny Tennis match for free. In the fall, Luteran and the Gators held a free clinic for all kids in the Meadville community; as well as holding their Make a Difference day, where the entire team went to the Meadville Children's Center and helped re-paint the inside of the center.
"It is an honor to be recognized by the USTA for all the hard work our players have put in on and off the court," Said Luteran on recieveing the Coach of the Year honor. "I would like to thank the AMD Board of Directors for this special recognition."
